Where to Stay
Fodor’s Choice | Villa Le Barone.
B&B/INN | Once the home of the Viviani della Robbia family, this 16th-century villa in a grove of ancient cypress trees retains many aspects of a private country dwelling, complete with homey guest quarters. It feels like a “second home,” according to some fodors.com users. The honor bar allows you to enjoy an aperitivo on the terrace while admiring the views of the pool, rose gardens, and across the hills to the town. Guest rooms have white-plaster walls, timber ceilings, and some tile floors. The restaurant uses fresh produce from the owner’s farm in western Tuscany. Though the hotel staff may recommend it, the full, three-meal plan is not mandatory. Pros: beautiful location; wonderful restaurant; great base for exploring the region. Cons: rooms vary in size; 15-minute walk to nearest town. | Rooms from: €280 | Via San Leolino 19 | 055/852621 | www.villa-lebarone.com | 28 rooms | Closed Nov.–Easter | Breakfast.
Villa Sangiovese.
B&B/INN | On the town’s main square, this simple, well-run hotel has rooms that look out to the hillside or face the piazza. An enclosed courtyard is used for summer dining, and a terraced garden has numerous shady resting places on the way down to the pool. Country-style rooms with terra-cotta tile floors are furnished with antiques. The hotel’s restaurant serves regional dishes. A minimum stay of three nights is required. Pros: immaculate rooms; pool area great for kids; great location for exploring Chianti. Cons: front rooms can be noisy; lots of stairs. | Rooms from: €150 | Piazza Bucciarelli 5 | 055/852461 | www.villasangiovese.it | 19 rooms | Closed mid-Dec.–mid-Mar. Restaurant closed Wed. | Breakfast.
